a flower is
love
beauty captured
speaking in silence
I am Sun
light transformed to Matter
the miraculous
manifestation of dirt
formed from clay
painted by God
& the war goes on
the petals fall from the sky
by hundreds of hundreds
& thousands of thousands
fields of death are bathed in petals and stems
the remains of flowers atop the remains of man
both die Men and flowers and in death they are recreated
as themselves, a Man as a Man
a flower as a flower
can you see a flower
can you look
life sees life and is sustained
if only for a glance
we can speak to the silent flowers
they will talk back in our minds
I am a plant
as old as the Earth
as old as time
Who are you ?
What are you doing?
Stop
before...
I rain on you
& bury you
in my petals

Her parents were hacked to death as she watched helplessly, and then the 15 – year – old girl was gang-raped. No wonder Black Diamond decided to fight back. She became one of Liberia’s most respected guerrilla fighters amid the turmoil of fourteen years of brutal civil war. Joined the LURD rebels and started the Woman Artillery Commando that earned respect on the battlefield.

in every second of every day
someone is born
and someone dies
most times
no one ever notices
or stops to pay attention
it happens and that happening
is lost in time
in the haystack of all of the other
happenings, anonymous
unknown, forgotten
a yellow tulip
from the grassy place
can speak
above the card
finally
exhausted
exterminated
crushed
splintered
tired bones
waking pavement awning smokers
a yellow tulip
above the card
that wished goodbye
where she came to rest
cutting through cold
air, falling free
bent over yet sprite
in public housing
shut ins
live private lives told in
tortured loneliness
relentless relationships
one way conversations with self
the small things
like bedbugs
take on the greatest importance
like the cold
she wore a snow suit
and sometimes
rode her hover round down the hall
but that morning
after a night
of sleepless obsession
those small things
those bugs
chased her to the
open window
& induced flight
she jumped
from the 8th floor
& though I didn’t know her
I saw her
on the elevator
in the hallway
a cheerful lady
that always greeted you
with so much joy
the bugs
they had infested the building
bedbugs that suck
blood in the night
and so she lept
3 candles
3 windows
candles quietly burning
in 3 windows
small things
electrons
or bedbugs
pillows speaking in unison
through trees and birds nest
she flew
8 stories down
clutching her pillow
finding a quiet
freedom
