TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: The four laws of learning, a teaching concept used primarily in sports fits well with musical instruction as well: Demonstration, Explanation, Criticism and Repetition. Put simply, as expressively as I can I play each piece for the student (Demonstration). Briefly I explain why I have chosen a specific fingering and practice approach and why and how this works (Explanation). Thirdly working in a slow tempo to ensure accuracy I redirect the student’s performance so that it accurately reflects the musical notation. Finally we repeat, and repeat and repeat, and this repetition trains, the unconscious mind, the muscle memory as well as the conscious memory. In this way, once these basic performance mechanics are mastered a student can move to the next level, the level of interpretation and expression.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: We will learn to play the piano with proper posture and a good technique. We will learn to read the musical staff, to play our scales and arpeggios. We will learn how tonality and common root movements can help us to play common and simple songs by ear. We will learn the names and root positions of triads and 7th chords and how these root positions help us to play by ear and compose original music.

We will learn to compose a simple piece of music using the knowledge and ability we have acquired from our keyboard studies.

THINGS TO BRING: You will need to bring your books and music, along with your willingness to learn to play the piano.

WHAT TO EXCEPT DURING OUR LESSONS: We will have a lot of fun, and we will work hard towards the goal of making you the best pianist we can. Please be on time, and come prepared each session so we can progress. For the duration of the lesson you will need to remain focused and attentive to the lesson.

PRACTICE: Practice does make perfect. The more you practice, the more fun you’ll have playing the piano. If we meet every week for 30 minutes, and if you add 15 minutes of practice 5 days a week, that’s 105 minutes every week!

BOOKS, SUPPLIES, MATERIALS: I will supply students with books or music sheets. Students should bring either cash or a check made out to me the following week to receive their materials.

Students need a binder or folder to put photocopies (supplemental pages) in.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students pay one month in advance. Cancellations must be made 48 hours in advance or you will
be charged for the lesson.

PERFORMANCES: Performances play a crucial role in developing a student’s poise and confidence. While I can provide different levels of performance opportunity, it is up to the student and parent/guardians to decide whether they actually perform publicly or simply play for family during the last lesson of the semester.
